In the nearly 15 years since he opened the Tarry Tavern on the site of the old Lago di Como restaurant at 27 Main Street in Tarrytown, Henry Cabral had earned a reputation as the proprietor of an elegant but inviting dining option. Just a block south of the Music Hall, it had become a prized reservation on show nights. Surrounded by English Red Oak paneling, diners could choose from an informal tavern menu and a farm-to-table selection featuring local produce.

As far back as the late 17 th century, citizens of New England towns decided communal matters at “Open Town Meetings,” in which public issues and elections were discussed by the entire population gathered in one place at one time. When all sides had been heard, an elder or selectman would call for an up-or-down vote: “How say you, (Woodstock or Salem or Lowell)?” The people would then answer, “Yea” or “Nay,” and the issue would be decided.

A band born from busking on street corners in places like Ontario, New York City and Boone, N.C., as well as many points between, the Grammy Award-winning Old Crow Medicine Show has spent nearly 30 years promulgating old-time American and Appalachian music.

The Paramount Country Club in New City, on the Rockland County side of District 17, turned out to be an appropriate venue for Mike Lawler’s surprisingly robust victory over Mondaire Jones. The club was on the site of a mansion owned by Adolph Zukor, one of the founders of Paramount Pictures, and thus an apt setting for a Hollywood ending to a campaign that was supposed to be razor-thin close—and wasn’t.
