On the heels of announcing the opening earlier this month of The Flats of Acme Village – a 60-unit upscale leased condo development near the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Acme Township – the Granger Group is planning another Mt. Hope Road project. Called The Grove at Acme Village, the residential development is planned to include two three-story buildings with 96 total apartments.
A series of major closures are coming to the Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park to accommodate $8.5 million in improvements, including "improved access, new camping amenities, and modern facilities," according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Closures are taking place now through April 1 and then again from July 7 (after the National Cherry Festival) through the end of the 2026 camping season.

Grand Traverse County commissioners agreed this week to have a committee create a process for distributing the county’s opioid settlement and marijuana revenue funds. That process, which will come back to the board for approval, could allow the county to start getting money to more local organizations in need in 2025. Commissioners also heard an update on the region’s newly opened mental health center.

Traverse City Downtown Development Authority (DDA) board members Friday discussed early cost estimates and next steps for a handful of key projects they plan to focus on the next three years, including Rotary Square, East Front Street, a farmers market pavilion, and the Boardman/Ottaway riverwalk. Improvements for the two-way street conversion pilot and a possible downtown ambassador program are also on the table.

The Traverse City Housing Commission (TCHC) is targeting a new workforce housing complex near the intersection of East Eighth Street and Lake Avenue, which could potentially bring 40-50 income-restricted apartments to the downtown area. Though still in its early stages, the project offers a unique collaborative opportunity between TCHC, the City of Traverse City, the Grand Traverse County Land Bank Authority, and S B K Properties LLC – the private property owner of the former Copy Central building.

A local group called Traverse City Community Design is working to expand the boundaries of Traverse City’s three historic districts – Central, Boardman, and Downtown – and establish new historic districts in Slabtown and Old Town. At least 51 percent of property owners must agree to become part of a historic district, a designation that puts constraints on home construction and design but also preserves neighborhood character and increases property values, the group says.

A high-profile downtown office building is set to be converted into a new residential brownstone complex. Freshwater Development received approval from the Traverse City Historic Districts Commission Thursday for plans to convert the former Dingeman & Dancer building at the corner of Front and Park streets into a residential development with three brownstones – each of which will come with a private boat slip on the Boardman/Ottaway River. The project is the second announced this year from Freshwater Development, which is also redeveloping the former Cousin Jenny’s building at the corner of State and Union.
