Senior forward Hadlie Lowe and junior defender Abby Bachman are Third Team All-MIAA for the 2024 season. Lowe had five goals and an assist including two-straight game winning scores in the last two weeks of the season to keep the Lady Hornets alive for the MIAA Tournament. Bachman earned all-conference honors for the third-straight year after being named an honorable mention twice by the league. Bachman had career highs in goals, points, and shots while matching a personal-best of four assists to lead ESU. The Lady Hornets finished the year 6-8-3 overall with a 4-6-2 MIAA record to tie for eighth, but did not advance to the conference tournament based on tiebreakers.
The Emporia State men’s basketball team held the lead for the majority of the game, but Wayne State College scored with less than five seconds to go and a last-second Hornet three was off the mark in a 67-66 loss to the Wildcats at the MWSU Fieldhouse in game one of the Hillyard Tip-off Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. on Friday. ESU took the lead early but never stretched it further than seven points in the game. ESU led by that margin taking a 36-29 at halftime. Wayne State fought back with an 11-3 run to take their first lead of the game early in the second half. ESU responded and matched their biggest lead of seven with just over nine minutes to play, but couldn’t extend it as the Wildcats answered with a 12-4 run to retake the lead with under five minutes to go. Head coach Tom Billeter said he gave credit to WSC.
The Emporia State women’s basketball team stayed within two possessions for most of the first 30 minutes of their season opener, but #1 Minnesota State-Mankato pulled away in the fourth for a 99-74 victory over the Lady Hornets at the St. Joseph Civic Arena in St. Joseph, Mo. on Friday. ESU started hot with a 9-2 run to take a 15-8 lead in the first quarter, but MSU answered with a 10-1 spurt to lead 24-20 after the first quarter. Each team had the lead in the second as MSU led 43-38 at the break. Each team scored 21 in the third, but MSU finally found the knockout blow with a 27-5 run the fourth that put them up for good. Head coach Brian Ostermann said he was happy with how the team battled and wants to see the same effort from the team on Saturday.
The Emporia State women’s volleyball team staved off the Fort Hays State Tigers for a 25-22, 21-25, 29-27, 25-19 victory at White Auditorium in Emporia on Friday. ESU locked in offensively hitting over.333 in each of the last two sets on the way to hitting.286 for the match. Weronicka Wrzesinska led the offense with 22 kills while Camilla Ossola added 18. Rayishon Jackman led the team with 19 digs and also had 12 kills for a double-double while Wrzesinska also earned a double-double with 17 digs. The Lady Hornets (16-7, 8-5 MIAA) are back at home Saturday to host #6 Nebraska-Kearney for Senior Night. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. at White Auditorium.

The Emporia State football team didn’t lead in the second half and fell on Senior Day 45-36 to Central Missouri at Welch Stadium in Emporia on Saturday. After forcing a UCM field goal on the first drive of the game, the #20 Hornets marched down the field quickly but turned it over at the one yard line after a pass from quarterback Gunnar Gundy to wide receiver Tyler Kahmann was dropped and intercepted by the Mules. ESU got a stop and then scored to take their only lead at 7-3 on a pass from Gundy to Kahmann. UCM scored 21 points in the second quarter including their last touchdown with 30 seconds to go in the first half.
It was a busy weekend for the Hornets and Lady Hornets this weekend across the central time zone in several sports.

The Emporia State men couldn’t sustain a hot start and fell 91-79 at Pershing Arena to Truman State in Kirksville, Mo. on Wednesday night. The Hornets jumped out to a 19-4 run to start the game, but a 20-4 run back the other way gave TSU their first lead. The teams traded baskets over the next three minutes, but ESU didn’t lead after the six-minute mark in the first half. Trailing by nine at the break, ESU cut the deficit to six early in the second half, but an 8-0 Bulldog run reextended their lead to double-figures and the Hornets couldn’t trim it below three possessions again. Head coach Tom Billeter said there were positives, but that ESU left points on the floor.
