Volunteers in eastern Ukraine are risking their lives to rescue abandoned pets from frontline towns and villages. The dogs, cats, and sometimes birds that the team catches and moves to safety are often in states of extreme distress after being left behind by fleeing or missing owners. Animal Rescue Kharkiv recently filled its animal carriers in the town of Hirnyk.
