A sacred symbol that represents traditional Indigenous culture, an Eagle Staff is used at Indigenous ceremonies and celebratory functions. UWinnipeg's Eagle Staff, received this past spring, was used for the very first time at the Indigenous Graduation Pow Wow in March.

Emma Friesen, who is a member of the Wesmen Athletics' women's soccer team, took home first-place honours at the symposium for presenting her undergraduate thesis: "Voxel-Based Analysis of the Mouse Corpus Callosum Using Oscillating Gradient Spin Echo MRI Pulse Sequences."

After a short hiatus, The University of Winnipeg's 55-Plus Program is returning this fall. This unique program, which is the only one of its kind in Manitoba, has been supporting mature adult learners for more than three decades.

The University of Winnipeg is one of three post-secondary institutions in Canada to receive the Robbins-Ollivier Award for Excellence in Equity, which is valued at $100,000.

Thanks to $130,344 in funding through the Canada Foundation for Innovation's John R. Evans Leaders Fund, Drs. Stephanie Bugden, Amy Desroches, and Stephen Smith have opened the new Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience lab, which will examine the neural mechanisms underlying children's ability to learn to read, to write, and to perform math.

Dr. Jeff Martin is receiving a three-year Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Subatomic Physics Project Grant to support a joint project between physicists in Canada and Japan.

Seven University of Winnipeg researchers – Drs. Joshua Hollett, Darshani Kumaragamage, Ed Cloutis, Lian Smythe, Brandon Goulding, Stephen Smith, and Ross Stokke – received more than $1.3 million in NSERC funding through the Discovery Grants Program.

Two University of Winnipeg faculty members – Dr. Chantal Fiola and Dr. Mirjana Roksandic – are receiving SSHRC Partnership Development Grants each valued at $199,000.

Throughout the week, special events, learning opportunities, and activities will be dedicated to honouring Residential School Survivors and learning from Indigenous Peoples and perspectives.
