The mysterious Altar Stone at Stonehenge might have been transported more than 700km from north east Scotland.

BILLINGS – For only the second time since pallid sturgeon were listed as an endangered species in 1990, scientists have confirmed a female fish successfully spawned in the Missouri River below Fort Peck Dam.

“Word travels fast when anglers start catching salmon on Fort Peck, and especially those that are around 20-plus pounds,” said Heath Headley, Fish, Wildlife & Parks fisheries biologist for the lake, in an email.

Beauvais love of the outdoors was the motivation behind his recent adventure, following in the footsteps of geologist Thomas Jagger who explored the Yellowstone National Park region in 1893. Jagger was an assistant on a trip organized by Arnold Hague — one of several expeditions the noted geologist and explorer of the era mounted in the region. On the trip, Jagger packed along a camera to capture photos of the area.

The last grizzly bear hunting season in Montana was held in 1991.

“One of the reasons it's so controversial is because this challenge of growth and recreation management is hitched to many of the values that are most personal to all of us,” White said. “This is the place where we want our children to grow up. It's influencing how we feel after a day of work.”

The fish tagging is a continuation of studies looking at trout recruitment, health and adult mortality in the upper Missouri River Basin. A combined sum of about 8,000 trout were also tagged on the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Ruby and lower Madison rivers this spring. So far, anglers have reported catching more than 1,000 of them.
