A respite from the bustling city below, these venues bring style and sophistication to the top. Here, we highlight five thoughtfully designed spaces that have recently opened. Bar Tontine Bar Tontine has joined the F&B lineup at the Wall Street Hotel in Manhattan's Financial District. Located on the property's 15th floor with an 180-degree wraparound terrace, the rooftop bar and lounge was conceptualized by Michelin-starred chef John Fraser's JF Restaurants hospitality group. The space, designed by Rose Ink Workshop , takes cues from the 20th-century Maison de Verre (or “House of Glass”) in Paris, with amber light filtered through artisan-made glass panels and adorned with ebonized wood and lush, tropical greenery. Kasa Moto In Toronto, locally based firms Denizens of Design and DS Studio recently completed the rebuild of two-story Japanese restaurant Kasa Moto ‘s rooftop bar and lounge. The flow of the space was enhanced by relocating the bar, topped with pink-veined Cosmopolitan Quartzite, to the front , while a pergola was installed to define dining spaces. “The great gift of outdoor projects is light,” says Dyonne Fashina , principal of Denizens of Design. “Kasa Moto's rooftop is perfectly situated to catch everything from morning sun to golden hour. It's a popular destination at all times of day, so we had to meet the expectations of their guests. We needed to simultaneously create a serene respite for business lunches by day and a buzzy vibe for nights and weekends.” Kaso East London's One Hundred Shoreditch has introduced the Kaso rooftop bar and kitchen. The Eastern Mediterranean concept was created by chef Ilknur Celik and features interiors by Lore Group creative director Jacu Strauss . Guests are met by floral patterns in the lobby before heading upstairs to the seventh floor, where pink marble and lush foliage envelope a space evocative of a private garden. Le Vaux A chic Parisian retreat awaits at Le Vaux , a 46-seat outdoor space perched atop the eight-story Hôtel Barrière Fouquet's New York in Tribeca. Designed by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio and Office of Strategy + Design , the rooftop—available exclusively to hotel guests and members—takes cues from the French gardens of Vaux-Le-Vicomte and Versailles and is punctuated by shades of green and lavender. While offering a welcome backdrop, the natural stucco material—made from tree resin and bark—is also water resistant and reduces heat absorption, providing passive cooling throughout the property. Locally based Estudio Carroll , which was tasked with bringing the eight-room hotel to life, sought to emphasize sustainability, cultural preservation, and integration with nature. Ultimately, it was an “opportunity to find solutions through innovative design and the ability to achieve a positive impact,” says lead architect Miguel Carroll. Beyond the chukum, for instance, air continually flows through the interiors thanks to a mostly open west-facing side, grilles located near the rooms, and a staircase that acts as a natural chimney, guiding hot air upwards and out of the building. At the core of the design is an inventive solution to the area's limited sewage infrastructure: a man-made system, one of only 160 operational artificial wetlands in Mexico, that mitigates the amount of wastewater generated by the hotel. “We created a walkable garden that purifies wastewater by mimicking natural wetlands,” explains Carroll. The system is combined with a pretreatment septic tank, effectively purifying wastewater generated onsite, which “not only reduces the hotel's ecological footprint but also supports biodiversity and water conservation efforts in Puerto Escondido,” he adds. The earthy pink and beige of the exterior carries through into the interiors, where it is joined by reddish and brown tones of clay, as well as the warm hues of legally harvested macuil wood and palm wood, a local material used for the doors, railings, and lattices. Clay slats are used on the exterior flooring and are also found elsewhere on the property, which boasts a ground-floor restaurant resplendent in natural materials and a rooftop terrace, home to an infinity pool that offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. By maximizing interior spaces while preserving the surrounding natural habitat, the building's form is defined by curves and contours that create visual fluidity. Members Club Hume Melds Wellness and Tactile Elegance The Venice Beach retreat takes over a 13,500-square-foot space formerly occupied by Snap Inc. The cofounder of private Venice Beach, California wellness club Hume was on the team at Princeton University, where he studied architecture, and competed in the French Nationals (a native of France, he came to the U.S. when he was 13), but after graduating college in 2016, the goal-oriented Olympian mindset burned him out. When Bole started working out following a three-month hiatus, he was astounded by how quickly he regained mental clarity, crediting exercise with “keeping me in balance all these years,” as he puts it. Shortly after his epiphany, Bole moved to West Hollywood, forming friendships through cycling and padel tennis, and further realized that “doing these healthy things breaks barriers. It makes it easy and organic to meet new people,” he recalls. “You don't have to go to a nightclub.” One of these like-minded friends was Roger Briggs, who was keen to leverage his finance background and launch an Equinox-style fitness model. Meanwhile, Bole—propelled since childhood by the idea of opening a beach club that evoked the Mediterranean and North Africa, which reflects his French and Algerian heritage—worked in real estate development. Fusing their expertise and interests, the duo recently unveiled the 13,500-square-foot Hume. Close to the beach, in a building that formerly belonged to Snap Inc., Hume is a social hub with a distinct mission. The members retreat for those with active lifestyles who look forward to unplugging find a minimalist yet homey space adorned with bronze-tinted mirrors, custom-colored cork and rubber flooring, and walls “that are almost like velvet,” Bole points out, “hand-troweled in plaster reminiscent of the Sahara Desert. Every single corner is curved so that the light diffuses opposed to making sharp, harsh points of contrast.” Ceramics by local artist Louise Martens further heighten the sense of movement. Bole—with an assist from Vancouver-based Bricault Design and Monterey Park, California firm Wisan Studio—largely tackled Hume himself, pulling inspiration from the ancient gladiator gymnasium preserved at Pompeii and his mother's Algerian roots. “I wanted it to feel warm and artisanal, to strip away the technology and almost go back in time and get lost,” Bole explains. Past the dark, cocooning entry corridor and timber reception desk sculpted by local maker Chad Hagerman, members can take to the bespoke sauna and cold plunge pools or head up to the longevity-encouraging gym for spontaneous chats with trainers. There are yoga and Pilates studios, a lounge with a U-shaped sofa for hangouts over IV drips, a recovery treatment zone, and two scenic rooftops. The higher turf-covered one invites guests to partake in alfresco classes, while the other serves as a café offering “first-class seats to the sunset,” says Bole. “The lighting is beautiful. It filters through the leaves and there's always a breeze.
