Utah Weather: Pleasant Memorial Day for mostSALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4) - Happy Memorial Day, Utah! For the most part we'll have gorgeous weather to look forward to for the holiday, but brief showers will be possible for some. Today will be the warmest day of the 3 day weekend with highs running about 10-15 degrees above average in the north, and a few degrees above average in the south. We start warming up fairly quickly with warm temperatures all day, topping out in the afternoon in the mid to upper 80s in northern valleys, possibly hitting 90° for some spots on the Wasatch Front. Mountain valleys will also be warm with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. Central and southern Utah valleys will reach the upper 70s to low 80s. The typical hot spots will be similar to the Wasatch Front's highs in the 80s to low 90s. A system is digging its heals over Nevada where most of the precipitation will remain this week, but some moisture will still be thrown into the Beehive State. Moisture will mainly be seen in the way of increasing cloud coverage with partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies across the state, but some shade will be welcomed with the heat of the day. If your plans take you up into higher terrain, you may want to keep your eyes to the skies. Mountainous regions will see a few isolated showers and rumbles of thunder pop up in the afternoon. What showers we do see should be light and brief, so it won't be a total washout. You shouldn't need to cancel your plans if you do head to the mountains, but it's important to stay weather aware as there will be some activity in the region. Remember, lightning is the number 1 weather-related killer in Utah due to our love for mountains and lakes, both of which tend to have more frequent lightning. The stubborn Nevada system nudges slightly to the east on Tuesday bringing windy conditions to much of the state. Air near the surface will be quite dry, which means precipitation will likely evaporate before reaching valley floors, but higher terrain will again see a few isolated showers. Relative humidity near the surface will be in the teens and single digits for much of the week. The combination of heat, dry air, lightning, and gusty winds will make for increasing fire danger Tuesday through Friday. Gusts out of the south/southwest could reach 30-40 mph for most of the state, and even higher locally, especially on Wednesday and Thursday. Winds shift slightly on Wednesday, which should be enough to nudge showers into the Wasatch Front along I-15. The tricky part is the dry air near the surface may evaporate the precipitation before it reaches valley floors in many cases. So it's a matter of the winds shifting the right direction and moisture chipping away at the dry layer. Isolated showers are expected Wednesday and Thursday, but we could also see a few dry thunderstorms which would further exacerbate the fire risk. Southwest Utah could see some activity on Thursday, but it'll mainly be in the north. Again, not a total washout, just a few showers here and there. By Friday the lingering storm system over Nevada will finally eject to the northwest. This will allow for cooler more seasonable temperatures to close out the workweek, which is still pleasant. It may also bring a few more isolated thunderstorms to the north on its way out.
