Although the open interest increases have subsided a little, the interest in the market is increasing significantly. With recognition of the situation the new long futures positions are in for live cattle, it's almost like knowing what their hand is. This leaves two very distinct possibilities. One is that they could defend their position by buying more, in hopes of spooking shorts to cover. While this may sound heroic, I think the funds realize that were they to push basis to even, there would be an onslaught of change in ownership of cattle. Second would be that they capitulate to trade another day. At this point, I think we are all holding our breaths with knowledge of the fund and speculator position, and whether the consumer, grocer, packer, cattle feeder, backgrounder, and cow/calf operations are willing to pay higher. With today's Fed move of lowering rates by another quarter, the bout of inflation is set to increase. Do cattle and beef appreciate with, or are they hampered by?

11/11/2024 A volatile start to the week. The bulk of trading has taken place within the first minute of trading at the opening.
11/11/2024 This is the way I see it and not to be confused with fact. The US dollar was moving sharply higher and bonds sharply lower beginning in October of this year.

11/13/2024 It's getting even more interesting. Open interest declined again on Tuesday's trade, pretty much cutting in half the gains seen starting on October 21.
Fats were lower. There is ample beef production out to February and beyond if October on feed breeches 12 million. There is a worry that there is nothing coming behind them. I think the industry is in a transitioning period for which when complete, there won't be a need for as many cattle as we have had. I would look more towards sustaining what we have, over producers expanding, or rebuilding. The trend is well established of producing more beef from fewer cattle, as well as increased imports and decreased exports. Therefore, until these trends are broken, one should not expect a surge in heifer retention or a decrease of imports. All else hinges on demand for which the new administration appears anxious to get prices down. So far, the over 6.5% rise of the US dollar in 6 weeks, and rates sharply higher in the same time frame, appears as if they have a good head start in making buying new things on credit more expensive and discouraging exports with the currency exchange rate.
