The Mets signed right-handed reliever Oliver Ortega to a Minor League deal on Sunday, according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi.

Really, it should always be. The New York metro area has the largest Dominican population outside of Santo Domingo, many of whom care quite deeply about baseball and New York sports. The Mets have tried to capitalize on this demographic reality, most famously with the 2005 signing of Pedro Martinez that catalyzed one of the most exciting runs in franchise history.

Though it’s no one’s idea of a juggernaut, the Mets starting rotation is looking a little clearer than it did at this point last offseason.
