Heavy-duty lasers — 300- or 600-kilowatt — are expected aboard the Trump-class battleship.

"We're going to evolve that platform, AGM-158, into more of a modular system," said Tim Cahill.

"China is a country that is not easy to deter. No one country can do it alone," Gilberto Teodoro said.

"Deterrence isn't quite the same as it was during the Cold War."
