As of this moment, we don’t know what the 2025 Boston Red Sox Opening Day roster will look like. In fact, if we want to get our Bertrand Russell on, we’d have to admit that we can’t even be sure that Opening Day 2025 will happen at all. And if we go Full-Bertrand, we’d probably have to ultimately conclude that we can’t be sure that the Boston Red Sox even exist! But that would kill our page views, so let’s hold off on that for now.

So just how much do the Red Sox need another right-handed hitter, anyway? As Alex Speier points out in a mode of analysis I’ve never actually encountered before but love, the single most valuable thing a hitter can do in Fenway Park is pull a ball to left field. That’s obvious based on the eye test (because, you know, there’s that big wall out there) but Speier gives us the actual numbers: righties who pull balls in the air at Fenway produce a batting average of.643 (!) and a slugging percentage of 2.147 (!!!). That’s the best slugging percentage for any kind of hit, in any ballpark in baseball.

No longer a franchise defined by a curse - Instead, they find themselves in the lead in the race for Team of the Century. But others are closing fast, and they need someone new to lead them through these turbulent, but also opportunistic waters.

More and more free agent options previously linked to the Sox have signed elsewhere. Outfielder Anthony Santander, who blasted 44 homers last season and was frequently mentioned as a potential fit as the right-handed bat (well, switch-hitting bat, in his case) the Red Sox have said they are looking for, signed with the Blue Jays on a five-year, $92 million deal.
