LEE COUNTY — Local youth baseball players showcased their skills at the USSSA Alabama All-State Championships in Oxford on June 20-22, with several teams taking home trophies.

SMITHS STATION — On a day that showcased its gleaming new indoor facility, Smiths Station High School gave the crowd a reason to stay until the very end. The Panthers edged Loachapoka High School in a thrilling 25-19 double overtime championship game to win the All Valley 7-on-7 tournament on June 24.

BEAUREGARD — The Beauregard Diamond League Baseball 10U team claimed the Division II state championship, defeating Ashford 6-1 and 3-1 in back-to-back games at Thompson Park in Montgomery on June 29.

AUBURN — Members of Auburn University’s adaptive athletics program helped lead the United States Wheelchair Handball team to a gold medal at the Euro Hand 4 All Tournament held in Lyon, France, on July 2-4.

AUBURN — Major upgrades to multiple Auburn High School athletics facilities are progressing as planned despite recent downpours and a heatwave. Among those upgrades are the installation of synthetic turf fields at both Cimo Field and AHS Softball Field and updates to press boxes at both stadiums.

LOACHAPOKA — Loachapoka High School is calling on the community to grab their golf clubs to help support a good cause. The school’s football program will host the Loachapoka High School Golf Classic on July 27 at 9 a.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Opelika, with all proceeds benefiting LHS football student-athletes.

AUBURN —The Auburn City Council on July 7 certified several municipal races in which only one candidate qualified before the filing deadline. The action finalized the vast majority of city council seats ahead of the Aug. 25 municipal elections, with six of the city’s eight council seats going uncontested.
