It's rare that Kansas faces a high-level opponent before they even make it to ESPN's yearly Champion's Classic, but KU is playing a very tough non-conference schedule in 2024, and it starts tonight with a true home game against North Carolina.
While there is always some debate as to who qualifies as a "true blue blood" in college basketball, these two blue-clad schools are without a doubt part of that elite group. They haven't faced off since KU's miraculous comeback to win the 2022 title, but this will be the most talked about matchup in the sport today, and possibly this weekend. Here are some details for those looking to watch
I picked a bad time to be sick! This is a busy day for me and for KU athletics, so this will have to be a multi-purpose post. The football team takes on ISU at 2:30pm on Fox Sports and the soccer team fights for the Big 12 championship at 6:00pm (sorry, that’s on ESPN+). If you have anything random to talk about, feel free to put it in this post, and use it for an OGT for all things Jayhawk as well.
Great weekend for the Jayhawks
Just four days ago, Kansas had a tough early test in Lawrence against North Carolina. Tonight, they have to lay it all on the line again in ESPN’s Champions Classic in Atlanta. While some of the shine has come off Tom Izzo and Michigan State’s star (which was always going to happen, given the unsustainable success he had going in March for a while), it’s important not to write this team off. Michigan State ranked 16th last year per KenPom (KU was 27th) and while KP only puts them 34th right now, Bart Torvik’s rankings have them 17th. They aren’t elite, but this team isn’t going to be a pushover, either.
