It is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so you may see more people wearing purple. It serves as a symbol of peace, courage, survival, honor, and personal dedication to domestic violence awareness. WEMU's David Fair checked in with the executive director of Safehouse Center in Washtenaw County for a picture of what is happening locally. Christine Watson is the guest on this week's edition of "Washtenaw United."

Tree Town is looking to find new and productive ways to avoid wasting wood. The City of Ann Arbor is partnering with the company “Urban Ashes” to repurpose storm-damaged and diseased trees. We often discuss the ecological benefits of planting and maintaining trees but rarely look at the environmental impact wood can have once it’s down. Urban Ashes CEO Paul Hickman joined WEMU's David Fair to look at the partnership, how it will work and the benefits it can provide.

Voters are in the process of deciding four different countywide ballot proposals. Proposal 3 would establish an older persons services millage. If approved, it would levy a half-mill of taxes to fund activities and services for Washtenaw County residents aged 60 and older. WEMU's David Fair gets a perspective on the issue with Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels executive Director, Barbara Niess-May.

The University of Michigan is forging ahead and working towards being a leader in generative Artificial Intelligence with its U-M-GPT program. As it does, there are environmental concerns to be addressed. The initiative is part of Michigan’s broader effort to integrate AI into its academic and administrative infrastructure, enhancing learning, teaching, and research. But, AI consumes a great deal of energy. WEMU's David Fair spoke with the Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at U-M, Dr. Ravi Pendse, about how U-M is dealing with the environmental ramifications of AI.

On Tuesday, November 5th, voting concludes, and decisions will be made about our elected leadership. Locally, there are a number of ballot issues to be decided as well. In Ann Arbor, one of the ballot questions is whether to create a publicly-owned Sustainable Energy Utility. It would be an opt-in, renewable energy source to further move the city towards it's carbon neutrality goals. Ann Arbor director of Sustainability and Innovations, Missy Stults, joined WEMU's David Fair and Michigan League of Conservation Voters executive director, Lisa Wozniak, for a review of the proposal and its implications for the future.

On Tuesday, we will finish up voting in the 2024 election cycle. Food and consumer prices and the economy have been right at the top of the issues people are concerned about. Putting politics aside, the folks at the Ypsilanti Food Co-op have been first-person witnesses to the impacts of these issues. General manager Corinne Sikorski joined WEMU's David Fair with her perspective on what it has meant to the bottom line and to the customers the co-op serves in our community.

A few years ago, researchers from the University of Chicago conducted the first — and to date only — in-depth needs assessment of youth and young adults who were street homeless in Philadelphia.
