In what has come to be a routine for SpaceX at 0235 GMT on 12 July 2024 a Falcon 9 v1.2FT Block 5 rocket rose from its launch pad at Vandenberg, California USA. It was carrying Starlink Group 9-3, a set of 20 v2 Mini communications satellites, 13 of which had Direct-to-Cell capability. Except that this launch did not go to plan.
The science fiction writer H. G. Wells, in his book The First Men in The Moon (published in serialised form in 1900) suggested that the Moon might have an underground species of space creatures called Selenites. The book was updated to make a movie version in 1964 which featured large scale cave structures.
‘C itizens, you are dissolved.’ With those words General Joachim Murat dispersed the Council of Five Hundred in November 1799 and ended France’s first experiment with parliamentary democracy. The scene was the culmination of the 18 Brumaire coup, which enabled Napoleon Bonaparte to seize power. A British cartoon mocked ‘the Corsican crocodile dissolving the council of frogs’, but in France the coup’s success was mostly greeted with relief. After ten years of revolutionary chaos, the French people wanted a strong government and the man who had conquered Italy and Egypt before he turned thirty seemed the ideal candidate to restore order. His success has cast a long shadow over French politics.
