This study reports the successful synthesis and design of a novel series of oxime-fused quinolone (pipemidic acid) hybrid analogues III (a–e) as potential antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agents. A panel of bacterial and fungal strains was used to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the synthesized compounds, while COX-II inhibition studies assessed their anti-inflammatory activity. Compound IIIc showed significant inhibition against E. faecalis, S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 9 µg/mL (ZI 8-9 mm), surpassing the parent drug, pipemidic acid (MIC 16 µg/mL) (ZI 4-5 mm) & comparable to ciprofloxacin (MIC 0.5 µg/mL). In contrast, against Candida albicans, the compounds demonstrated limited antifungal activity (MIC > 512 µg/mL) compared to fluconazole (MIC 2 µg/mL). Structural elucidation was confirmed through FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and mass spectrometry analyses. The oxime group was introduced at the C-2 position of the piperazine-linked quinolone (pipemidic acid) scaffold. Among the series, compound IIIb exhibited 40.7% inhibition of carrageenan-induced paw edema (P < 0.001), similar to naproxen (40.0%). Molecular docking studies supported these findings, showing that compound IIIc displayed the strongest binding affinities (-10.3, -8.2, and -8.3 kcal/mol) with key amino acid residues (ARG57, THR46, MET16, HIS45, VAL122) in the active sites of DNA gyrase from S. aureus (2w9s), P. aeruginosa (6m1j), and E. coli (6cqa), even outperforming reference ligands. These results suggest that oxime-derivatives of quinolone, especially IIIc, have strong potential as lead candidates for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drug development. Graphical abstract

Accurate assessment of lumbar spine range of motion (ROM) is essential for evaluating spinal biomechanics, monitoring disease progression, and assessing outcomes following motion-preserving interventions. Numerous techniques have been developed to quantify lumbar motion, each differing in measurement principles, accuracy, and clinical applicability. This review synthesizes current methods for assessing segmental and global lumbar spine ROM. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed using the terms "lumbar spine" AND "motion analysis" OR "motion evaluation" OR "motion assessment." Peer-reviewed English-language studies published between 2000 and 2025 were screened according to predefined eligibility criteria. Eligible studies were categorized based on assessment methodology and clinical application. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria and evaluated a range of lumbar spine motion assessment techniques, including dynamic fluoroscopic systems, advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional X-ray analysis, motion capture systems, and wearable inertial measurement units (IMU). Dynamic imaging and computer-assisted analysis generally demonstrated improved measurement precision compared with conventional radiographic assessment, while MRI-based and wearable technologies offered radiation-free or ambulatory alternatives. Each modality demonstrated distinct advantages and limitations with respect to measurement accuracy, practicality, and clinical application. A wide range of techniques is available for lumbar spine motion analysis, each offering unique strengths and limitations. Although conventional radiographs remain widely used in clinical practice, emerging technologies provide enhanced dynamic assessment and greater measurement precision. Continued standardization of imaging protocols and further validation of these technologies are needed to facilitate broader clinical implementation.

Earthquakes represent one of the most destructive natural hazards, particularly in developing regions along the convergence zone of the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates, where they result in severe human casualties, extensive infrastructure damage, and major economic losses. This study applies an integrated methodology that combines geospatial data with a Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to produce the first regional-scale, screening-level Seismic Hazard Zonation (SHZ) map for the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), situated at this tectonic boundary. Eight governing factors, including distance to active faults, tectonic lineaments, lithological characteristics, soil properties, earthquake magnitude, seismic frequency, and focal depth, were analyzed and weighted according to their relative influence on seismic hazard potential. Validation using the Frequency Ratio (FR) approach demonstrated FR values below 1 in low-susceptibility areas, approximately 1 in moderate-hazard zones, above 1 in the high hazard class (FR = 1.66), and markedly elevated in the very high hazard class (FR = 9.27), indicating a positive spatial association between the modeled hazard distribution and recorded seismic events; the latter value is partly inflated by the small areal extent of the very high class and the spatial clustering of events within it. The analysis categorized KRI into five hazard levels: very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. Approximately 2,284 km2 (4.9%) of the region falls within the very high hazard class, highlighting the urgent need for site-specific mitigation measures and disaster preparedness strategies. Overall, this screening-level relative zonation provides a first-order spatial prioritization of seismic hazard in the KRI, supporting regional planning and guiding policymakers toward areas where detailed site-specific investigations, probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, and geotechnical characterization should be prioritized.

Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is an uncommon condition that may present with acute back pain and neurological deficits. Prompt diagnosis and timely intervention are important to optimise neurological recovery.A 21-year-old female presented with a 5-day history of back pain associated with right lower limb weakness, gait instability, and bilateral foot numbness. Clinical examination demonstrated reduced muscle power (4/5) in the right lower limb and an ataxic gait. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a posterior epidural hematoma extending from T6 to T8 with significant spinal cord compression and cord oedema. The patient underwent urgent T6-T8 decompressive laminectomy and evacuation of the hematoma. Intraoperatively, no vascular malformation was identified. Histopathological examination demonstrated an organizing hematoma without evidence of vasculitis or malignancy, and subsequent investigations excluded coagulopathy and autoimmune disorders. Postoperatively, the patient achieved complete neurological recovery with restoration of full muscle power. At one-year follow-up, she had returned to her premorbid functional status, and repeat MRI showed no recurrence, with only mild residual cord signal changes consistent with gliosis.SSEH should be considered in patients presenting with acute back pain and neurological deficits, even in the absence of identifiable risk factors. Early recognition, MRI evaluation, and timely surgical decompression can result in favourable neurological outcomes.
