With only two films selections it looks like Sundance’s Spotlight section is about to be snuffed out but among the pair of films programmed here we find perhaps the best sophomore feature of 2024 in Dea Kulumbegashvili ‘s Venice Film Festival competition premiered April — which lands another U.S premiere after showcasing at the New York Film Festival last October. Metrograph Pictures grabbed the rights on this one.
The U.S. Documentary Competition consistently showcases some of the most talked-about documentaries of the year. Year after year, it delivers at least a quartet of standout titles that go onto proper award pushes and best of lists at the year’s end and at times its the offerings in the World Docu comp section that grab the attention. Long-time indie actress Grace Glowicki, Sundance alumni in Meera Menon (2016’s Equity ) and Bryn Chainey are among the seven film projects selected for the Midnight section – and it wouldn’t be impossible to see one last offering to be added to this line-up. Canuck actress Glowicki cast herself in the lead for her debut titled Dead Lover. Menon moves into a zombie apocalypse type setting with Didn’t Die. In Gints Zilbalodis ‘Cannes Un Certain Regard selected animated film Flow, a diverse group of animals bands together to navigate a post-apocalyptic on….a boat. We have a house cat, a Labrador retriever, a capybara, a lemur and an errant bird all helping to the group’s diverse skill set. This was shortlisted to the group of fifteen films for the Best International Film category and will likely receive a nomination for the Best Animated feature.
