The Capital City is shining light into the darkest days of winter. For the first time, downtown revitalization nonprofit Montpelier Alive has illuminated seven of the city's historic bridges with thousands of bulbs — every night through mid-February, and on special occasions, they will stand bright above the Winooski River and its North Branch. After the heartbreaking floods Montpelier experienced in 2023, the lights are a sparkling sign of community spirit and strength.

For more than five decades, Meta Strick has been making mixed-media art in the backwoods of Fairfield. The turquoise-haired 82-year-old invites visitors to open houses and workshops at her gallery next to her log cabin home. Both spaces are chockablock with art and eclectic collections. Ona Wöldten has been designing knitwear for more than two decades, but the Lindal sweater was her first attempt at creating a hand-knit sweater pattern. Wöldten, who uses a pseudonym for her fabric work, teamed up with the owners of Junction Fiber Mill in White River Junction to launch the distinct leafy pattern three months before the 2024 New York State Sheep & Wool Festival, held in Rhinebeck, N.Y. Every year attendees make popular sweater patterns and call them “Rhinebeck sweaters.” Fiber fans loved Wöldten’s design, and many wore handmade versions of her sweater to the event.
