(Bloomberg) -- US President Joe Biden warned Israel against an invasion of the city of Rafah in southern Gaza as cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas remained deadlocked.

The U.S. had been hoping for a breakthrough in the negotiations before Islam’s holy month of Ramadan, which began after sundown Sunday.

A recent UN-backed report said famine is imminent in northern Gaza where 70% of the population is on the brink of starvation.

There are more than one million in Rafah, most of whom fled there after the outbreak of the war in October. Israel says Rafah is the last bastion of Hamas.
