For the past five years, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Remembrance Project has worked to document lynchings that occurred in the county. It’s part of a national and statewide movement to identify and memorialize lynching victims. Two in Mecklenburg County have been verified and others cases are being examined.

As executions have resumed in South Carolina, on Thursday in North Carolina death penalty opponents will begin a 136-mile walk across the state to bring attention to those on death row here.
