The state has to repay Rs 2.75 lakh crore by 2030, according to a report the auditor submitted to the government in May. This makes implementing poll promises tough for the next government.

Chhattisgarh tops the list with 8.61 lakh houses (over 22 per cent of the total allocation), followed by Maharashtra with 6.37 lakh (over 16 per cent). The other states in the top five list are: Madhya Pradesh with 3.68 lakh houses, Gujarat with 2.99 lakh and Bihar with 2.43 lakh.

The 15th Finance Commission noted in its main report for 2021-26 which was submitted on November 9, 2020 that “only 15 States have set up the 5th or the 6th SFCs. Several States have still not moved beyond the 2nd or 3rd SFC.”
