THE past few weeks have been a whirlwind for us in the automotive industry. Events, launches and test drives have been taking place so frequently that I sometimes wish I could be split into three individuals just to keep up.

SOMETIME ago, I was talking to then Metro Pacific Tollways spokesman and lawyer Junjie Quimbo and we got to discussing the issue of the traffic jams that happen at the entry and exit to the North Luzon Expressway every time there is a long weekend.I told Quimbo that I was perplexed by the system of having to put up booths or toll plazas on entry and exit into the expressways at the metropolis (Metro Manila) side of the highway.You see, this is where the bulk of the motorists come from during the holiday exodus to the provinces. As per records of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the Land Transportation Office, about one and a half million motor vehicles drive through the expressways during long holidays to be with their families in the provinces.These one and a half million vehicles all enter the expressways at the same time (both at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) and the South Luzon Expressway at the start of the break and then get to the exit at the same time too at the end of the break.And this is what causes the huge, more than half a day long congestion, just to get into the expressway. At the north end, traffic build up extends all the way from Quezon Avenue to the Balintawak interchange, and the southern side starts from Guadalupe to Nichols.Quimbo explained that the system requires (at least for NLEx) that they collect the initial toll fee for the open system stage, which is from Balintawak to Bocaue, hence the toll plazas. He said the unique program of the NLEx needs it to do that. I don't dispute that, I may even agree.But I told him maybe we can do it another way, and all it takes is a little tweaking of the systems' programming. I suggested that we keep the metropolis side of the expressway barrier free and collect the tolls at the provincial entry/exit points.Imagine this, all one and a half million cars enter the expressways barrier free driving freely and smoothly into the highway. These one and a half million will eventually break up into smaller numbers as they exit to their respective destinations, reducing the congestion by a huge portion.As for coming home, they can be logged at their entry points and are charged the amount due wherever they exit. Remember, we are using RFIDs now to monitor their entry and exit into the tollways.But Quimbo then asked me: How do we monitor those exiting into Metro Manila? Because monitoring those leaving the metropolis is easy, but those coming back is quite the challenge.To be honest, that question stumped me. Yes, I could not figure out a decent solution to that one hole in my argument or suggestion.Today, I just found out that Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC) may have a solution to this single issue of my suggestion. NLEx and all tollways under MPTC will soon be using the 'gantry' system, similar to what Singapore uses on their paid roadways.You see, in Singapore, to solve the traffic issue, main roads are toll roads during certain times of the day. RFID trackers are scattered all over these highways and there are indicator lights that tell if they are on or off. These RFID trackers are installed on 'gantries or frames that span the highway crosswise' to intercept RFID signals as vehicles pass.If, and when MPTC implements this project, their tollways will now become toll plaza free ensuring a smooth and barrier free entry and exit along their highways. At that point, I am sure SMC Tollways will probably do the same or even come up with something better.Meanwhile, the biggest issue here will be the plate number tracking of those errant motorists who will try and game the system. Because as of this date, due to the continuing issue at the LTO between their warring information technology system providers, our government still does not have a comprehensive list of motor vehicle plate numbers and the details of ownership of these plate numbers.Discussing that will be for another column.

It must be noted, however, that this pickup is geared more toward overlanding than hardcore off-roading like the more powerful, fuel-powered versions. Still, it's certainly capable of going off the road.First, let's discuss the concept of a range-extended EV, especially in a pickup. Unlike traditional fully electric vehicles that rely solely on batteries, the Hunter Reev combines an electric drivetrain with a small gasoline generator that recharges the battery when needed. This setup cleverly bridges the gap between electric power and the range limitations that can come with it. You get the lower emissions, quiet operation, and instant torque of an EV, along with the reassurance of a backup fuel source when far from charging infrastructure — a practical solution for the Philippines, where charging stations are still sparse outside urban areas. Notably, models like the BYD Sealion and BAIC B30 are already available, but the Hunter Reev brings something new.The Hunter Reev impresses not only with its powertrain but also with its design and tech features. Changan has crafted a bold, modern look that can hold its own among the industry's major players. With a rugged stance, athletic proportions, and aggressive front fascia, it looks every bit like a high-end pickup on the road. It has a premium craftsmanship often missing in budget-oriented pickups, making the Hunter Reev a refreshing sight.Inside, the cabin feels like it belongs in an upscale SUV rather than a workhorse. Changan has equipped the Hunter Reev with features typically reserved for luxury vehicles, such as a large touchscreen infotainment system, leather-trimmed seats, and high-quality materials throughout. Additionally, although the gasoline range extender alleviates some worries about running out of power, it still relies partly on fossil fuel. The Hunter Reev is a stepping stone, not a fully 'green' solution. Yet for many, it's a welcome compromise that feels realistic in a country where EV infrastructure is just beginning to develop.What's clear is that the Changan Hunter Reev has introduced something entirely new to the Filipino market. It's a reminder that EVs aren't limited to small city cars or luxury sedans; they can also be rugged, reliable and hardworking pickups. With its thoughtful range-extending design, competitive price, and premium features, the Hunter Reev is an excellent choice for drivers who need a reliable truck and want to reduce their carbon footprint while embracing new technology.Other brands will surely follow, but for now, Changan leads as the innovator, paving the way for electric pickups on Philippine roads.
