Disgraced fashion mogul Peter Nygard was sentenced to 11 years in prison on Monday for four convictions of sexual assault, almost one year after a jury found him guilty. “Peter Nygard is a sexual predator,” Superior Court Justice Robert Goldstein said in his sentencing decision in front of a packed courtroom. “He is also a Canadian success story gone very wrong.” The Crown was urging Goldstein to sentence Nygard to 15 years in prison, while defence lawyer Gerri Wiebe was asking for six years. With credit for time already served in custody, Nygard has just under seven years left to serve. The 83-year-old Nygard was convicted by a jury last November of attacking three women and a 16-year-old girl in the top-floor bedroom of his former Toronto headquarters at 1 Niagara St. between the 1980s and 2005. In emotional statements delivered in court at Nygard's sentencing hearing in July, his victims described the lasting pain and trauma caused by the sexual assaults. The impact includes anxiety and depression, panic attacks, derailed careers, difficulties maintaining intimate relationships, and in the case of one woman, thoughts of suicide. Their identities are covered by a standard publication ban. “Mr. Nygard used his wealth, his privilege, his resources, and his reputation in the fashion business and industry to his advantage,” Golwalla told Goldstein in July. After taking into account pre-sentence credit, the term of imprisonment proposed by the defence would have kept Nygard in a provincial jail such as the South, where he already has a special hospital bed and access to a phone. Wiebe had argued Nygard would be worse off in a federal prison, which she said lacks appropriate supports for elderly prisoners with health problems. Among other issues, Nygard has Type 2 diabetes, an enlarged prostate, claustrophobia requiring special transportation to court, light sensitivity requiring special glasses and makeshift visors, and allergies to strong detergent and polyester — ironic for a man once dubbed the Polyester King. “The goal from my perspective is to have Mr. Nygard in the provincial system,” Wiebe said in court in July. “It's the devil that he knows.” The Finland-born, Winnipeg-raised founder of Nygard International, once the largest manufacturer of women's clothing in Canada, still faces sexual assault charges in Montreal, Winnipeg, and New York.
