The Redington Huskies made the trip south to Seward for the region tournament, and headed home with the top prizes.

The Soldotna boys finished second, while the Soldotna girls finished third, Saturday at the Northern Lights Conference tournament at Palmer High School in Palmer.

The Redington girls won a fifth straight title, while the Huskies boys won for the fourth time in five years, Saturday at the Kachemak Conference wrestling tournament in Seward.

The Kenai Central hockey team defeated Soldotna 4-1 on Tuesday in Northern Lights Conference action at the Kenai Multi-Purpose Facility.

The prep basketball season opened Thursday with area teams playing at the Craig Jung Kenai River Challenge at Kenai Central, the Cook Inlet Academy Classic at Cook Inlet Academy and the Doc Larson’s Roundball Classic at Wasilla.

Kenai Central sophomore Isla Crouse and Homer senior Leif Jaworski won the Candy Cane Scramble at Tsalteshi Trails just outside of Soldotna on Friday.

The Soldotna girls and boys both moved to 2-0 on the young season with victories at the Craig Jung Kenai River Challenge on Friday. The Palmer girls and boys also picked up wins.

Peninsula brings home 11 state titles

Besh Cup races 1 and 2 were held Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 21 and 22, at Kincaid Park in Anchorage. The six Besh Cup races are used to select Under 16, Under 18 and Under 20 skiers for Junior Nationals. Other ages also race Besh Cup to face top competition.
