A Suffolk developer is looking to revive a stalled 14-acre subdivision behind Smithfield's Royal Farms gas station at Battery Park Road and South Church Street.

Suffolk Public Schools is reminding families that daily free school meals are available for their students. SPS Nutritional Service Department says that they provide “over 55 percent of their students on a daily basis.” and are aiming to continue their efforts to help families struggling with increased food costs. SPS Coordinator for Nutritional Services Angela Howell reflected on how this program started during the pandemic and became something “that never ended.”

Suffolk Planning and Community Development returned to provide data and the next steps in the development of the 2045 Comprehensive Plan. Suffolk City Council observed a report on the plan during their Wednesday, January 27 work session, which detailed options and strategies ahead of its future adoption in the Spring/Summer timeframe of this year. During his presentation, Suffolk Comprehensive Planning Manager Keith Cannady reflected on the long process it has taken to gather data from the Suffolk community and draft the plan with the feedback they've received.

City and safety leaders returned for the Suffolk Public Safety Committee's first meeting of 2024 with a few hot topics to review. Held on Wednesday, January 24 at City Hall, committee members discussed recent traffic camera data from the Suffolk Police Department, incidents at public housing and the recent safety threats towards Suffolk Public Schools.

The Franklin Southampton Concert Association, with funding from the Camp Foundation, announced it will present the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in concert on Friday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Southampton High School Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Virginia Hound Heritage hosted a supper at the Boykins Fire Department on March 21, 2024, for the surrounding baseball and softball communities, aiming to provide both a good meal and donate a crucial item in today's society. Led by Troy Cook, the Virginia Hound Heritage donated eight AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) to these communities for onsite use at their recreation facilities in case of emergencies. Representatives from Boykins, Capron-Drewyville, Courtland, Ivor, Sedley, Wakefield, Waverly, and Windsor were present to accept the donation. The organization assessed which communities lacked AEDs onsite and provided this vital equipment.

Opening day at the Smithfield Farmers Market, egg hunts and the community Easter sunrise service at Windsor Castle Park quickly come to mind.

One of the mission statements of this award-winning publication is “to report the news that affects the people of our community fairly and accurately.” Since 1873, this newspaper has served the public greatly and also performed one of the spiritual works of mercy, in my view as a Catholic Christian, that is, instructing the ignorant and uninformed (and, indirectly, helping counsel the doubtful).
