Article content The existing interlocking brick sidewalk, located between Judge Avenue and the Kate Pace Way (opposite to James Avenue), and on Judge Avenue between Memorial Drive and the Lakeshore Drive Overpass, has reached the end of its lifecycle, according to the city. It will be replaced with concrete sidewalk and asphalt boulevard. Concrete work is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete. Asphalt restoration is scheduled for May 9 and 10. During this period, drivers may experience minor interruptions while passing through the construction site. Pedestrian traffic is encouraged to take Judge, Leask, and James avenues. We never want to provide any information that could potentially identify the victims,” he said. “In this particular case, given the fact that one of the victims was a staff member at the hospital and the other was a patient, out of an abundance of caution, especially surrounding the patient, we chose not to release the accused's name so as not to run the risk of inadvertently identifying either victim.” On April 18, the North Bay Police Service was contacted after an incident took place at a local hospital involving a physician who assaulted a patient and threatened another person at the hospital. Officers from the Criminal Investigations Unit have concluded their investigation and have arrested and charged the accused after he turned himself in at police headquarters on Monday. The accused in this incident is a 45-year-old male who is charged with assault with a weapon and uttering threats. The accused was released on an undertaking with a future court date. Mark King says drug dealing were a regular occurrence Author of the article: Article content What was supposed to be a place to get warm and out of the elements turned into a security nightmare where drug dealings were a regular occurrence. “I was getting phone calls on the weekend about what was transpiring,” said Coun. Mark King, chairman of District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board. “The problem with those facilities (is) they provide an opportunity to congregate, and that's what happens.” The Warming Centre will look a lot different this November, King said. He said work is already underway to figure out what the winter shelter situation will look like. Last year the Gathering Place stepped up to assist at a location on Fraser Street. However the influx of people caused a lot of issues. “The Warming Centre was equipped for 40, but we had more than 100 people needing the service at times,” King said. He said plenty of hard lessons were learned. And location was a big one. “There will be a change of location; we recognize the security issue that was a huge problem and understanding how it impacts the surrounding area is really important. It has a major impact.” King wouldn't say which areas he's looking at or whether the Homeless Hub would incorporate a Warming Centre. DNSSAB commissioned a study “Homelessness System Review and Feasibility Study” to determine whether a homelessness hub equipped with various services including a Low Barrier Shelter would serve the community better than a piece-meal approach. Coun. Chris Mayne expressed his frustration about a promise made by the North Bay Regional Health Centre when the former psychiatric hospital closed its doors years ago. He said the community was promised supportive housing, but that never happened. Mayne questioned whether the health centre and Canadian Mental Health Association understands the urgency and might be willing to help.
