Since 1970, the experimental music collective Onions has been playing together, recording their improvisations, and only very occiasionally performing. This Friday night, October 4th, the band will play live — the fifth time ever! — as they celebrate the release of a two-disc retrospective, available now on Full Spectrum Records.

It covers South Carolina senator Preston Brooks's 1856 attack on anti-slavery congressnan Charles Sumner after the latter delivered a fiery abolitionist speech peppered with personal insults directed at slaveholders and an ailing family member of Brooks. The speech and the incident further polarized the politics surrounding slavery at a time when our country was already on the verge of tipping into national violence.
