"We're already wrapping up the feasibility study," he said, adding that it involves safety, financial and site selection parameters. "Our goal is to build a micro modular reactor with a capacity of 5 to 15 megawatts and have some sort of a proof of concept that will help us convince the Filipino people that nuclear energy is safe, reliable, cheap and [a] clean source of base load power which our country badly needs," he added. Meralco Chairman Manny Pangilinan said last year that micro modular reactors are smaller nuclear plants that are meant for island provinces, island cities and data centers, among others. These are not full-sized reactors like the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. Aperocho added that Meralco is also investing in building the capabilities of Filipinos in operating micro modular reactors by providing scholarships focused on nuclear engineering. For the pilot program, he said the company would send 5 Meralco engineers with the intention to add slots for representatives from the government to join academic and internship programs abroad. Meralco said this venture also aims to support the government's push to diversify its energy mix.
