First, unsuccessfully, staged at La Scala, Milan in 1904, it is based on a play by the American David Belasco, set in Nagasaki in 1900 and telling the story of the arranged marriage between US Navy Officer Lt Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton to the young (fifteen-years-old) Cio-Cio-San, who flits around silently like a butterfly. While he does not take the marriage seriously, she does, renouncing her religion while her family renounces her. Not unexpectedly, this tragic tale does not end happily!
The Tailor of Inverness sets out to tell the fascinating life story of Mateusz Zajac, a Roman Catholic, born in 1919 in Galicia in eastern Poland, but since the end of World War Two in western Ukraine, and how he eventually ended up as a tailor in Inverness. He was taken prisoner by the Soviets in 1939 and forced to work on a collective farm, freed after Hitler’s invasion and joined the thousands of Poles fighting with the British army in North Africa and Italy.

The two temporary Rotunda Theatres are situated in Brighton’s Regency Square, these days looking rather faded and unloved, especially as the grass hides an underground car park, visitors being allowed to barbecue on the grass and motor cyclists race around it – so there are plenty of distractions for any aspiring performer.
All in all, a musical programme that left the audience wanting more - much more! A hugely enjoyable fifty minutes that sped past.

It makes for a relaxing, slightly underwhelming evening of theatre, leaving one longing for more depth, though being glad one had seen it, especially as it reminds one of the very recent D-Day commemorations.
