“I take notes like some people take drugs,” is what Tim Ferriss said in his blog on December 7, 2007. Notetaking in educational institutions has always been a staple of the student experience. These days, it is very hard to walk into a classroom anywhere without seeing students hunched over their notebooks or iPads, dutifully writing whatever their professor is talking or writing about. As the times evolve, however, so do the methods of note-taking, and as with many things, people seek to optimize their ability to do so. Whether you take notes with an iPad or the classic pen and paper, it’s always good to have an open mind.

There comes a point in everyone’s life where you need to say enough is enough. While for some, that might be because of an annoyingly strict professor or an overbearing parent, for me, it is none of those things. For me, it is walking. Specifically, walking up hills. I think everyone can agree that walking uphill is, in no way, their favorite pastime. If it is, all power to you, maybe try cross country.

I first smelt it on my way to the Chinese Student Association meeting. Cruising down campus on my booster board to Burchard Hall with the wind rushing past me, I was enjoying the pleasant smell of the campus until my dream world got interrupted by something foul. I scrunch my nose in disgust as every olfactory sensory neuron in my nose gets assaulted in what I could only assume was chemical warfare. As I got off my skateboard and walked into Burchard, I could only think of one thing. “GYAD DAMN WHO BIFFED”.

As a first-generation Malaysian Chinese American with a college-educated parent, a big part of my upbringing was preparing for college. Or, at the very least, instilling the idea that a successful life starts with a four-year college degree and any other degree after that. So evidently, the first 18 years of my life were lived with the purpose of studying to get into a good college. However, life happened. When I was a youngin’, my idea of success was getting into an Ivy League and then buying a big house with a golden toilet. Specifically, the golden toilet was my idea of success for some odd reason. After experiencing life for 18 long years and going through experiences that have allowed me to mature, my idea of success has changed from a golden toilet to a more modest life. Now, my idea of success is financial freedom. To me financial freedom is the ability to live my life, to be able to do what I want without looking at my bank account. I want to own an animal with short legs. Perhaps a raccoon, a British shorthair cat, a chinchilla, who knows. THIS BEING SAID, going back to experiencing life and maturing, college has been a sobering experience (metaphorically, of course).

So this week I was planning to write about food, but that was last night at 2 a.m.. Since then I have reached the new amazing idea of what I recently discovered. While it is not a new concept, blind boxes have recently been added to my list of “dumb things to spend my money on.”

Thanksgiving was pretty cool to be honest. As a mashed potato enthusiast it is one of my favorite holidays as the mashed potatoes at thanksgiving dinners are always smacking. However, other than the dinner there is also the five day break that everyone looks forward to. While most people went home on Tuesday I ended up going home on Thursday because I didn’t really have a reason to go home until Thursday. Also I enjoyed the time alone in my dorm room. For Thanksgiving, my mom picked me up from Manhattan and we drove to Staten Island for a family friend’s party where I indulged in a lot of mashed potatoes. Throughout the night there were many fun moments with my childhood friends and most notably I beat my mom in the pool. As with most Thanksgiving parties, there are a lot of leftovers. Personally, my family left with a whole turkey and a tray of mashed potatoes, both of which my mom sent me back to college with. So now, in my dorm fridge, I have a bunch of turkey meat and a takeaway container of mashed potatoes.
