An unidentified tourist was captured on video climbing up the Via Ferrata to the Zugspitze wearing Birkenstock sandals. The video by German mountain guide Christian Hessing has gone viral on Facebook, with many commenters expressing their outrage at the reckless behavior of the tourist. Hessing is an experienced mountain guide and volunteer for the local mountain rescue. In his voice over, he sarcastically states, “It's just awesome how people are climbing out there.”

Ski racer Petra Vlhova has returned to on-snow training seven months after her horrific knee injury. The Slovakian tech specialist had skidded out mid-way on the course during the Giant Slalom in Jasna, Slovakia, in January 2024 and shot into the B-nets. Vlhova tore both her ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and MCL (medial cruciate ligament) of her right knee in the accident. At the time, Vlhova was only 25 points behind Mikaela Shiffrin in the Slalom standings, but her accident ended her season prematurely.

On Saturday, August 31, around 8:30 p.m., the police in Göppingen was alerted to a fire at the Treffelhausen ski area, Germany. The fire crews in attendance discovered the valley station of one of the resort's three surface lifts engulfed in fire. Thankfully, the local fire brigades were able to extinguish the fire quickly. Sadly, the fire totally destroyed all technical lift installations in the valley station.

For those who seek the thrill of steep descents, Europe's ski resorts offer some of the most challenging runs in the world. These runs demand technical skill, nerves of steel, and a love for the adrenaline rush that only a steep, fast slope can provide.
