ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Roanoke City Council appointed two members to the Roanoke City School Board just last week. The city is one of twelve localities in the commonwealth who still appoint their school boards rather than hold elections. Over the years, state lawmakers have pushed to require all school boards in Virginia to be elected versus appointed. Aside from Roanoke, a few of our other hometowns, including Salem, Lynchburg and Martinsville, also appoint members, so we wanted to check in with them and ask why that is.

WDBJ7 spoke to parents at Monterey Elementary School who said they're not surprised that the rezoning was approved, however they are disappointed that their student's environment will have to change; one in the form of homeschooling, and the other in the form of moving to a new school district.

Radford City School leaders said safety is the number one priority at all schools and the roads. The cameras are on and active while school bus drivers are on the road and are specifically looking for people who illegally drive past the bus while the stop-arm is out and the lights are flashing.

The Fire Marshal's office determined the man that lived in the house, who has since died of his injuries, purposely set the fire that caused the explosion.
