Stocks opened higher on Wednesday after another set of data indicated that the job market is cooling down.

The S&P 500 has swung between losses and gains on Wednesday, pressured by declines in energy stocks. Among all 11 sectors of the index, it was the only one in the red.

Stocks fell on Wednesday after vacillating through the day as oil slipped to its lowest value in months.

Stocks turned higher Friday as an upbeat reading on inflation expectations overshadowed a stronger-than-expected jobs report.

The major stock indexes were trying to eke out another week of gains. The Nasdaq Composite, up 0.4%, was gearing up to mark a 6-week winning streak, its longest weekly winning streak since June.

The Dow gained 131 points, or 0.4%. The S&P marked a new closing high for 2023 at 4,604.37 points, climbing 0.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite moved 0.45% higher.
