President Joe Biden and Donald Trump came face-to-face for the first time since the country’s November 8 election during a traditional meeting as part of the handoff of power. The President-elect shook Biden's hand inside the White House’s Oval Office during Wednesday’s face-to-face meeting — having declined to participate in the ritual four years ago. "Donald, congratulations," Biden said, greeting Trump with a handshake. "Thank you very much," Trump added. "Politics is tough, and it is, in many cases, not a very nice world. "But it is a nice world today, and I appreciate it very much." President Biden once again reiterated the Democrat’s wishes for a "smooth transition" of power ahead of Trump's inauguration in February.

Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott were filmed leaping into each other’s arms during the Gladiator II premiere in London on Wednesday night. The All of Us Strangers co-stars were filmed embracing outside London's Leicester Square during the highly anticipated sequel of Ridley Scott's 2000 box office hit. The Irish actors shared laughter and posed for pictures ahead of walking into the screening. Ridley had earlier teased that he could be directing a third film, with Mescal saying he would "absolutely love" to do another. ‘Gladiator II’ is in cinemas from 15 November.

Gary Oldman will be making an appearance on Cbeebies Bedtime Story for a special Children In Need episode. The Harry Potter actor, 66, will read a true story specially written for the episode by Claire Taylor, with illustrations from Tim Budgen. The BAFTA-award-winning star will feature in the special episode which will air on Friday 15 November as part of the BBC's Children in Need 2024 show. In a clip announcing the appearance, Mr Oldman was seen holding Pudsey Bear, the official mascot of BBC Children in Need.

The 2014 film is seeing renewed success at the box office a decade after it first debuted. To mark the anniversary, The Independent went behind the scenes to watch the film's reel being loaded into the projector. Madeleine Mullett, the British Film Institute's (BFI) programme manager told The Independent: "We have had about 15,000 people come to see Interstellar, just this year alone." The re-release has resulted in the film becoming the 8th highest-grossing IMAX release ever.

Watch live as police continue to patrol the scene of a deadly German Christmas market attack. A driver ploughed a car into a busy outdoor Christmas market in eastern Germany on Friday 20 December, killing two people and injuring at least 68 others in what authorities suspect was a deliberate attack. The suspect drove into the busy Magdeburg Christmas market around 7pm, when it was busy with holiday shoppers looking forward to the weekend. At least two people were killed, including a toddler, and 68 were injured, including 15 who were hurt very seriously, according to government officials. It said 37 people had injuries of medium severity and 16 were lightly wounded. Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff said he couldn’t rule out further deaths because so many people were seriously injured. It was earlier reported that the death toll was 11 by German newspaper Bild. The suspected driver of the car was arrested at the scene and has been named by local media as Taleb A, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who first came to Germany in 2006.
