13.6 miles from Headquarters, stands the Bertha Hill Lookout. According to the Idaho Fire Lookouts website, this was the first recorded fire lookout in the United States, first manned in 1902 by Mable Gray, a cook for a logging company who sat in a tree watching for smoke between meals. Not only the first fire lookout, Bertha Hill is still used on an emergency basis, making it the longest-used lookout, as well. Several towers were built between 1902 and 1958 when the current tower was built, according to the Forest Fire Lookout Page.
