On this day in 1896, the court issued Plessy v. Ferguson, in which it upheld a Louisiana law requiring “equal but separate” accommodations for white and black passengers on passenger trains. The decision was overturned in Brown v. Board of Education, which was handed down 58 years later, almost to the day.

Chief Justice Edward Douglass White died 105 years ago today. As Nora noted in her Closer Look about him, White was the first associate justice ever to be elevated to chief justice (well, not counting Chief Justice John Rutledge’s brief, sad stint as an associate justice).

On this day in 2009, then-President Barack Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule soon in United States v. Hemani, a closely watched case addressing drug users’ gun rights. When it does, the ruling will likely reignite not just the debate over how the court approaches the Second Amendment, but also the debate over how justices rule in cases involving drugs, and whether they apply a different standard in such cases.

Believe it or not, Supreme Court justices sometimes have jury duty. Justice Sonia Sotomayor “was among the nearly 250 city residents who reported for jury duty at the D.C. Superior Court” on Tuesday, according to The New York Times. “By noon, the jury office had notified the justice that she would not be needed,” but she stuck around “to have lunch with some of the judges.”
