On Thursday, in a unanimous vote, the NHL officially approved the Arizona Coyotes’ relocation to Salt Lake City. The news comes 11 months after Tempe voters rejected plans to build the team a new arena.Tempe Councilman Randy Keating said voters were ultimately right to reject a proposal for the roughly $2 billion project, which would’ve been privately funded but paired with a massive property tax break.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he's preparing to introduce emergency legislation to state lawmakers that would offer Arizona abortion providers an expedited path to getting licensed there.

Mesa Mayor John Giles and Arizona Congressman Greg Stanton on Monday announced roughly $1.75 million in federal money for two water infrastructure projects.Stanton said the projects’ focus is on improving Mesa’s ability to make the most of its water supply.“The city of Mesa manages one of the largest pipe infrastructure systems in Arizona — more than 2,500 miles of water mains. And some of those water mains are 50 years old, meaning they’re vulnerable to cracks and breaks.”

Mesa was the second stop in a three-city tour by President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign to underscore the administration’s investments in infrastructure.Campaign co–chair Mitch Landrieu said it’s important for voters to consider the long-term impact of those initiatives.“President Biden made promises to Arizona, and on top of the $7 billion that he sent to the state with the 609 projects,” said Landrieu, “We're investing in water, we're investing in manufacturing of chips. Arizona is benefitting in a huge way from President Biden’s vision.”

After climbing for an extended period, gas prices in Arizona seem to have hit a plateau. The statewide average has fallen by about 4 cents in the past week, to $4.09 per gallon.

Mother’s Day can be a difficult holiday for some. The majority of women who come through the doors at one domestic violence shelter in the Valley are mothers.Shelter staff and several local businesses celebrated them Thursday with everything from manicures to a taquisa, or Mexican-style buffet.There’s a sense of peace in the air as women sip coffee and tea, while they laugh and paint sunflowers together. Some of their children grab a brush and join in, or just sit in their mother’s laps.

The Peak Fire was reported Saturday evening and hasn’t made much progress since then, according to authorities. Fire crews expect to have it mostly contained early this week.Amanda Oliver with the Tonto National Forest said the fire has burnt 360 acres of mostly open desert area near State Route 87 and is just under halfway contained.“It’s all just open desert area, Sonora desert area,” said Oliver. “There’s no infrastructure, no value at risk other than our natural resources.”
