These days it's impossible to imagine the thriving town of Inverurie without its railway station. But if it wasn't for the determination of residents to fight the 1960s Beeching cuts, Inverurie Station would be gone.

Aberdeen was brought to a complete standstill on October 2 1954 as thousands of people turned out to see the last-ever tram to Rosemount in 1954, pulled by two horses, Bill and Betsy.

It's only really in seeing Aberdeen from above that you can see how much parts of the city have changed since the 1960s. These photos capture the city before oil, when change was happening at a gentler pace.

Plans for Union Square were first mooted in 1997, but the development was beset by delays. As progress slowed, costs only increased. We look back at the drawn-out saga to make Scotland's biggest integrated transport, leisure and retail centre a reality.

In October 1941, a tragic blaze at the Palace Hotel in Aberdeen was so ferocious the glow could be seen from Peterhead. But our archive photos over the years also show happy memories of Dons fans and dogs being rescued from the Dee.

The Tall Ships visited Aberdeen in 1991 and 1997, and will glide into the city once again next year. The 2025 event is now offering a new generation of young people in the north-east the opportunity to join crews as sail trainees on their voyage.
