A number of new movies and limited television series will debut this week, including the following titles opening in theaters or premiering via video on demand on various streaming platforms:

Watching Jack Webb's Sgt. Joe Friday question crime victims and interrogate suspected criminals, one might think everyone in the 1960s spoke in a curt, clipped monotone manner, using precise pronunciation and no-nonsense delivery. The series, of course, is “Dragnet,” the second incarnation of which ran for four seasons, from 1967 to 1970, with reruns playing in syndication for decades to come. Friday — played by series creator Jack Webb — intentionally avoided dramatic flourishes to convey realism and character authenticity. The meticulously detailed procedural aspects of “Dragnet” influenced all future TV police series. The show was also effectively lampooned — along with other police dramas — by 1982's crime comedy series, “Police Squad!”

TAMPA — Few people knew John Lennon as intimately as May Pang. For three days only, a free exhibition will allow guests to see John as May saw him. “The Lost Weekend — The Photography of May Pang” will be presented Friday through Sunday, Jan. 24-26, at Tempus Projects, 1624 E. Seventh Ave., second floor, in Ybor City.

In Lord Dunsany's “The Blessing of Pan,” Tommy Duffin, a local boy, is guided by some preternatural instinct to construct reed pipes. Through his subsequent piping, he inadvertently enchants his fellow villagers, enticing them to eschew the “wearying way” of the modern world with “the noise of machinery and the clamor of sellers.” In H.P. Lovecraft's “The Festival,” the tale's unnamed narrator finds himself in an ancient, secluded seaside town where his ancestors once dwelled. The village seems frozen in the distant past, with “ancient vanes and steeples, ridgepoles and chimney-pots, wharves and small bridges, willow-trees and graveyards; endless labyrinths of steep, narrow, crooked streets, and dizzy church-crowned central peak that time durst not touch; ceaseless mazes of colonial houses piled and scattered at all angles and levels like a child's disordered blocks,” and other uncanny anachronisms. During his visit, he invited to witness the titular commemoration, which illuminates the community's connection with the old ways, and to rites “older than man and fated to survive him.”
