Cannabis sativa plants have been widely investigated for their specific compounds with medicinal properties. These bioactive compounds exert preventive and curative effects on non-communicable and infectious diseases. However, C. sativa extracts have barely been investigated, although they constitute an affordable option to treat human diseases. Nonetheless, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and immunogenicity effects have been associated with C. sativa extracts. Furthermore, innovative extraction methods in combination with nanoformulations have been proposed to increase desirable compounds’ availability, distribution, and conservation, which can be aided by modern computational tools in a transdisciplinary approach. This review aims to describe available extraction and nanoformulation methods for C. sativa, as well as its known antioxidant, antimicrobial, and immunogenic activities. Critical points on the use of C. sativa extracts in nanoformulations are identified and some prospects are envisaged.

The renewable energy market, particularly the photovoltaic sector, has experienced significant growth over the past decade. Higher education institutions must play a vital role in the training of professionals, which the sector is currently demanding and will continue to require in the future. A pivotal resource for understanding the performance of PV modules is the experimental extraction of the characteristic I-V curve in laboratory practices. This paper presents an innovative and low-cost I-V curve tracer which can be used in indoor laboratories for teaching purposes. The described measurement system presents the novelty of helping form an energy-harvesting IC to force a sweep of the voltage from values close to zero to the open voltage circuit (Voc). An Arduino Micro board interfaces the implemented electronics and a LabVIEW-based monitoring and control program. The system proved its reliability and accuracy when it was compared to a calibrated commercial I-V tracer. The experimental results show that for a low-power PV module illuminated by a lamp, the proposed I-V tracer only deviated 1.3% from the commercial one in measurements of the maximum power.

Police officers in training (cadets and provisional officers) are the population most tested in fitness attributes compared to police officers already in operational service. As such, this study aims (i) to validate a fitness assessment protocol for police officers, and (ii) to confirm the effect of sex on fitness performance. In this methodological study, 122 cadets from the Portuguese Police Academy participated and carried out the fitness protocol (horizontal jump, handgrip strength, 60 s of sit-ups, and 20 m shuttle run tests) in two moments (test–retest), separated by one week (seven days). Complementarily, the results of the first assessment were used to study the effect of sex on fitness performance. Superior fitness performances were observed on the retest, with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.89 and a standard error of the mean of 0.45 in the fitness assessment protocol and significantly higher values (in all fitness assessments) in male participants. In conclusion, the fitness assessment protocol achieved high reliability in terms of reproducibility (which indicates that it is a valid and reliable protocol), and the influence of sex on the police officers' fitness profile was confirmed.

Soil contamination from oil spills in the canton of Francisco de Orellana in Ecuador is the biggest contamination problem in the region. It affects the quality of resources and poses health risks to the surrounding communities. To find an economical and efficient alternative for the remediation of soils contaminated with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), the application of oil palm bagasse was proposed. This is a locally available industrial waste. The methodology of the study was based on the application of six treatments (G-A, G-B, O-A, O-B, M-A, M-B) belonging to the bagasse of Elaeis guineensis and Elaeis oleifera, in two percentages of concentration, 98:2 and 96:4, during a period of 20 days. To determine the efficacy of the treatments, the bagasse of the two palms was characterized. In addition, the initial physicochemical characterization of the soil and the final characterization after the treatments were carried out. Soil characterization included analyses of macronutrients, micronutrients, metals, pH, EC and TPH. The results of the initial characterization revealed that the concentrations of electrical conductivity and TPH were more than 70 and 50 times the values established in the 97-A ministerial agreement, respectively. However, after the final characterization, the effectiveness of the treatments in reducing metal concentrations was observed. Likewise, conductivity levels were reduced by more than 10 times. As for TPH, the G-B treatment stood out by achieving a 56% removal of this pollutant.

The ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) is implicated in protein homeostasis. One of the proteins involved in this system is HERC1 E3 ubiquitin ligase, which was associated with several processes including the normal development and neurotransmission at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), autophagy in projection neurons, myelination of the peripheral nervous system, among others. The tambaleante (tbl) mouse model carries the spontaneous mutation Gly483Glu substitution in the HERC1 E3 protein. Using this model, we analyzed the implication of HERC1 E3 ubiquitin ligase in the activity of UPS, autophagy, and synaptic homeostasis in brain and muscle tissues. Regarding UPS, no differences were found in its activity nor in the specific gene expression in both brain and muscle tissues from tbl compared with the control littermates. Furthermore, the use of the specific UPS inhibitor (MG-132), did not alter the evoked neurotransmitter release in the levator auris longus (LAL) muscle. Interestingly, the expression of the autophagy-related gene p62 was significantly increased in the muscle of tbl compared to the control littermates. Indeed, impaired evoked neurotransmitter release was observed with the autophagy inhibitor Wortmannin. Finally, altered levels of Clathrin and Synaptophysin were detected in muscle tissues. Altogether, our findings show that HERC1 E3 ubiquitin ligase mutation found in tbl mice alters autophagy and vesicular recycling without affecting proteasomal function.
