GREENVILLE — Alleghany lost just six games in five singles wins here last Thursday, whipping Riverheads, 7-2, in a Shenandoah District girls’ tennis match. The win moved the Cougars to 12-3 on the season. Haley Ryder at No. 2, Alayla Morgan at No. 3, Kara Nicely at No. 4 and Mylee Dunbar at No. 5 all won singles matches, with senior Emma Wolfe, in her first match of the year, stepping in and winning 8-1 at No. 6.
MONTEREY — The Highland softball team picked up a huge Pioneer District softball win here Monday evening, beating Craig County, 9-8. The victory moved the Rams to 5-4 in the Pioneer and 5-8 overall, going into a home matchup with Parry McCluer on Tuesday (see separate story on tournament seedings) to close the regular season.
NEW CASTLE — Bath County split a pair of Pioneer District softball games last week, beating Craig County on the road, 5-1, on Tuesday, and losing a 12-6 decision in Buena Vista to Parry McCluer on Thursday. The Chargers finished the regular season with a 4-6 district mark and a 7-11 overall record. They begin play today in the Pioneer District tournament (see separate story).
LOW MOOR — Quinten Harris and Spencer Tallman sealed it at Clifton Academy for the Alleghany boys’ tennis team last Thursday. The No. 3 doubles combination scored an 8-4 win, avenging an early-season loss to Riverheads and beating the Gladiators 6-3 in a Shenandoah District match. Led by Bubby Entsminger’s impressive play at No. 1, the Cougars led 4-2 after singles.
ALLEGHENY HIGHLANDS — Bath County hasn’t played varsity softball since 2019. Highland? It was 2012 the last time the Rams played at the varsity level. The two programs will play for their 2026 lives today in Monterey. Highland, the No. 4 seed, will host No. 5 Bath County in the first round of the Pioneer District tournament. On the line?
