I am continually amazed by the New York Times best-selling authors the High Point Literary League brings to the city. The fall speaker was no exception and dazzled with his stories of intrigue. Larry Loftis, author of books such as “Watchmaker's Daughter,” “Code Name Lisa” and “The Princess Spy,” first entertained at the High Point Literary League's Author Welcoming Dinner for board members and their guests at the String & Splinter Club. This “progressive” dinner allows the author “progress” from three tables, beginning with the salad, then an entrée, and the finale is the dessert (always delicious at the String).
Was it Paris? London? New York? No, it was High Point as models walked and strutted down the runway for the fourth annual High Point Fashion's Night Out. This fabulous event, now hosted by the Junior League of High Point, began through the vision of two High Pointers, Stephanie James Goldman of Allen & James Home and Katy Brame Dahany, owner of Monkees of High Point. At first the duo held the event at Allen & James Home Design, which put their design studio in the historic Sherrod House (Thank you for your historic preservation of this beautiful home!) on North Main Street.

Growing High Point is growing! Growing High Point was the brainchild of Patrick Harman, executive director of the Hayden-Harman Foundation, based on Washington Street. Harman through the foundation has been such an asset to the Washington area district, creating so many programs to uplift the 27260 ZIP code. Growing High Point began in 2016 as an initiative of the foundation and in 2019 was established as a separate non-profit entity. Though I will expound later in this column, the mission of GHP is to transform vacant lots into vibrant urban gardens producing fresh fruits and vegetables for those who live in food deserts.
Every year the refrain is the same: “This is the best High Point University Christmas Prayer Breakfast ever. What will President Nido Qubein do next year to top this?” Well, this was the best ever, and I also resonate that this year's prayer breakfast will be almost impossible to top! Somehow Qubein pulls the proverbial rabbit out of the hat and makes the impossible possible.
I just cannot believe how fast this year has flown by. Since Christmas is just days away, I have interrupted my normal sequence of events for a few Christmas columns.
I think I forgot to wish everyone a Merry Christmas when I wrote my column last week. That being the case, I also forgot to wish our Jewish friends Happy Hannukah. Very interestingly, this year both Christmas and the first day of Hannukah or the Festival of Lights occurred on the same day, Dec. 25. Yes, that is extremely rare; it has only occurred five times in the past 114 years, according to the Jerusalem Post. The concurrence of the Christian and Jewish observances is known by some as “Chrismukkah.” What an interesting word! I had not heard of that word before, so naturally I looked it up.
