The 100 Mile Wilderness is a stretch of the Appalachian Trail that extends from Monson, Maine to Abol Bridge, which sits about ten miles South from Mt. Katahdin. It is the most remote, untamed section of the entire trail and is exactly 100 miles. And if you're moving southbound, you will probably enter this portion on your first full day on trail. It is suggested you have ten days worth of food and supplies on you when you go through the wilderness, but I was able to arrange a resupply about halfway in through Shaw's Hiker Hostel.

On July 13th, I finished the 100 Mile Wilderness after entering it on July 4th, so a total of nine days in the wilderness, which is on par with the average 8-10 days it takes most people to hike it. About thirty miles into the Wilderness, I started to experience some significant knee pain, mostly on the side and below my right knee cap. The aggravation was being caused primarily by steep descents and uneven terrain…which is basically all of the 100 mile that doesn't go straight up. At times it was nearly debilitating. Fortunately, I knew exactly what it was because I've dealt with this pain in the past, recognizing it as an IT band inflammation. I anticipated it being a problem at some point on this thru hike but didn't expect it to show up to the party so soon. The iliotibial band is a ligament that runs from the glute down to the shin and can tighten against the thigh bone and/or knee joints, causing acute pain. So I knew some treatments for the pain and was able to manage the discomfort knowing it wasn't a serious knee injury.

MADISON CO., Ala. ( WAFF ) - Bus drivers with the Madison County School System hit the roads on Tuesday to prepare for their 2024-2025 bus routes.

Trail names are odd. Most thru hikers have one already or receive one on the trail. The unwritten rule is that you are given a name by another hiker, and it shouldn't be self-assigned, but that's not always the case. Occasionally you'll find a hiker that either never took a trail name or decided to use their given name after test driving a trail name, but the general practice on trail is that you take an alternative name. Trail names are kind of like cosplays that hikers assume for a short season. They go around calling each other Hot Dog, Longshot, Juice, Bubbles, Happy, Dumbledore, Running on Empty, Poet, Slinky, Grey Colt, Canada Dry (a Canadian NOBO I met with the driest sense of humor), Papa Smurf, Short Bus (a retired special ed. teacher), even Fart Master. The names are accepted carte blanche as reality. Hikers might spend hundreds of miles together only knowing each other by these assigned monikers and never even know each others' real names. That's odd to me, and initially, part of me felt like it's artificial escapism, however rooted in tradition the tradition may be.
