As the fires—among them the Eaton and Palisades, now listed as two of the most destructive in California’s history—continue to threaten, the urgency to support the displaced and bereaved grows. David Lynch, the eccentric American director known for his enigmatic filmography, including Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive, has died at 78. His family announced his death on Facebook on January 16th. In 2024, Lynch revealed that after decades of smoking he had developed emphysema, which would prevent him from directing.

On Monday, Art Basel Hong Kong announced the shortlist for its inaugural MGM Discoveries Art Prize, spotlighting emerging artists Shin Min, Kayode Ojo, and Saju Kunhan. The winner will receive a $50,000 cash prize shared between the artist and their representing gallery, along with an opportunity to exhibit in Macau, China.
