Claude Monet’ s Nymphéas (1914–17) led Sotheby’s fall evening auctions on November 18th, fetching $65.5 million after a 17-minute bidding battle. The evening, which totaled $309 million, was split into two auctions: the Sydell Miller Collection and the modern evening auction. All prices include fees.
Anne Samat often wanders the salvage yards near her home in Cold Spring, New York. The 51-year-old Malaysian artist, who recentlymoved to the Hudson Valley from Kuala Lumpur, isn’t necessarily searching for anything in particular; any item—doorstoppers, discarded silverware, or metal pipes—might catch her eye. For Samat, these abandoned objects are a means to add dimension to (or “doll up,” in her words) her monumental textiles.

Ben Brown is not one to mistrust his convictions. In 2007, he championed Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne in London after three decades without a show in the city, convinced that the market had yet to catch up. “I believed in them, so I bought half the show myself,” Brown told Artsy over coffee in his new New York office. Les Lalanne, as they are known collectively, were active from the 1960s onwards. Known for their Surrealist bronze sculptures—whimsical yet functional pieces depicting animal forms—the pair remained somewhat niche for decades.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ’s Untitled (1982) sold for $22.95 million at Christie’s 21st century evening sale on November 21st, setting a new auction record for a work on paper by the artist. The record-breaking lot led the sale, which totaled $106.5 million. It was a white glove sale: A ll 42 lots on offer were sold. Last year’s sale garnered $107.5 million, also with 42 lots.
