NHS staff should be banned from wearing pro-Palestinian badges, says a report. Well, of course they should. And no, this is not a chillingly authoritarian crackdown on their right to free speech. In their place of work they shouldn’t be expressing any opinions about politics. As everyone on the Left would agree, if a member of NHS staff were to wear a badge that read “Hooray for Netanyahu”. Or, for that matter, “Vote Reform”, “Enoch was right”, or “Privatise the NHS”.
When we say someone is English, what exactly do we mean? Do we mean simply that they were born in England (in which case, they can be of any race)? Or do we think of the English as a distinct ethnic group (in which case, they’d have to be white)?
