I must have been a teenager when I first happened across Roger Doyle ’s name in a copy of Irish Rock: Where It’s Come From, Where It’s At, Where It’s Going, a 1992 compendium by Tony Clayton-Lea and Richie Taylor. Where many now-historic names were portrayed as being on the ascent, one name was treated with the reverence of an unappreciated genius: Roger Doyle, a lonely journeyman whose claim to history was pioneering the use of digital synthesis in homegrown Irish music. As it turns out, the legacy of the Dublin composer, producer, pianist, and occasional jazz percussionist runs far deeper than that.
