Chegg's stock has dropped 99% as students looking for help with homework defect to AI.

Online education company Chegg is laying off 319 employees, 21% of its total staff, and said it expects to fall short of its previously announced financial targets for next year as artificial-intelligence tools continue to eat into its online homework solutions business. Chief executive Nathan Schultz said the popularity of products such as ChatGPT and the introduction of AI summaries in Google search were weighing on Chegg’s revenue expectations. The company, whose stock has fallen 99% since 2021, has already been impacted by students turning to ChatGPT and other AI chatbots rather than paying for study help from Chegg.

A spinoff would be a major blow to Google following its loss in the antitrust trial.

Google is betting on artificial-intelligence systems capable of generating multiple forms of media in its latest bid to stand out in the burgeoning and competitive consumer AI business. The search giant on Wednesday opened access to the newest version of its AI technology, called Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental, which can generate text, images and audio from a single application. Google is making the technology available to developers from Wednesday and said it will power AI-generated summaries in the company’s namesake search engine.

Waymo will start testing self-driving cars on the streets of Tokyo next year in its first step toward international expansion. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google parent Alphabet, is already a common sight in several U.S. cities including San Francisco and Phoenix and has announced plans for more. In Tokyo, it will outsource management of its vehicles to Nihon Kotsu, Tokyo’s largest taxi operator, the companies said.
