Financiers, ready for dealmaking, are no longer scared to embrace the former president.

Blackstone wants to make private equity a bigger part of wealthy investors’ portfolios. The firm’s private-equity fund for the rich has attracted $6 billion since launching in January, returning 9.2% through September. Much of that growth has come from investing in the same array of deals as Blackstone’s traditional private-equity funds for institutional investors.

Marc Rowan has remade Apollo Global Management during his nearly four years as its chief executive into a firm that manages more than $700 billion in assets and is on a path to becoming a massive lender. When Rowan, 62 years old, came back from a “semi-sabbatical” in 2021 to take the helm from fellow co-founder and longtime CEO Leon Black, he told people he expected to do the job for five years or less, according to people familiar with the matter. Private credit is one of the fastest-growing areas of finance, and money from insurance companies has been its rocket fuel. In the latest example, investment firm Sixth Street is forging a partnership with Northwestern Mutual to manage $13 billion of the insurer’s assets, executives from the companies said. The money will primarily be invested in asset-based finance, a hot area that encompasses a swath of consumer lending, including mortgages, credit-card loans and auto loans.

Blackstone is investing in a company that helps organizations more efficiently store and analyze large amounts of data, executives from both companies said. It is the private-equity firm’s latest bet on a business that supports the growth of artificial intelligence. Blackstone is investing $300 million into a company called DDN.
