Some morning commuters caught a look at a rare tube-shaped cloud rolling across the sky on Tuesday morning, and it wasn't a tornado. This horizontal spinning tube of clouds is called a roll cloud. Roll clouds and shelf clouds are the two main types of arcus clouds, which appear along the leading edge of thunderstorms

THIS AFTERNOON: An ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day is in effect for severe storms in the mid-afternoon through the evening. Severe storms will develop in a line from Paris back to Marshall by 3 p.m., then move along I-70 into Columbia and Jefferson City between 5 and 7 p.m. Storms will eventually reach I-44 near sunset, with the severe threat dropping by 10 p.m. All severe hazards are possible today, including damaging winds up to 70 mph, 1-inch hail, and a few tornadoes. Scattered flash flooding is also likely, with an inch of rain expected in some spots.

THIS AFTERNOON: Scattered showers south of I-70, with mild temperatures in the low 70s. Rain totals will be below a quarter of an inch.

The Plains states that you may typically associate with "Tornado Alley" are nowhere near the top of the list of twisters for 2026 so far. Instead, tornado numbers are quickly climbing in states in the Midwest and Deep South, including Missouri.
